Most of us think of state parks as places to hike, bike, and fish. While those activities are possible at Berkeley Springs State Park in West Virginia, the real draw is the Roman Bathhouse where the hot spring water is piped in. Because the healing soaks were the staple activity for the area, the town was originally called Bath, like its resort-town sister in England. George Washington famously visited the site regularly to ease his many aches and pains.
Each February, samples are carefully drawn and sent to the International Water Tasting Competition in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. There the water stands up to international competitors on attributes of appearance, odor, flavor, mouthfeel, aftertaste, and overall impression.
The town, which sits in a narrow valley, was renowned for the hot springs that bubbled up through a rich layer of sandstone. Washington liked the baths. You heard it here first: G-Dubs was a big spa sissy. (What do you want to bet that Mr. Dollar Bill also moisturized. Pansy.)
A motorcycle-crazy Malaysian expat who trained in Thailand before moving to the U.S., Tan arrived in Berkeley Springs more than two decades ago. Today, after giving thousands of massages over at the Country Inn here in town, Tan owns Atasia Spa, about a block or so from the state park. Atasia is part of a compact, walkable downtown that has turned into quite the charmer of a destination, a mix of bookstores, galleries, cafes and accommodations catering in large part to a Mid-Atlantic urban stressite crowd.
Traveler reimbursement is based on the location of the work activities and not the accommodations, unless lodging is not available at the work activity, then the agency may authorize the rate where lodging is obtained.
There is the world-famous water-tasting competition, the healing mineral springs, and the artsy town square lined with cheese shops and crystal sellers. Locals joke that massage therapists outnumber lawyers three to one.

Apples typically ripen from July (yes, some early varieties startthen, especially in southern areas)through early November. Most apple varieties ripen inSpetember and October and this is when most apple festivals areheld. Unlike strawberries, which grow almost anywhere, apples aregrown commercially in half as many states. They do not grow well invery warm climates, like Florida, and along the Gulf coast, etc.Apples require a certain number of hours of cold (below 40 F) inorder to produce fruit. So most commercial apple production andapple festivals are north of Interstate 20 (I-20).
There are two general types of apple festivals 1) community festivals, usually organized by a church, school, local Chamber of commerce or a town and 2).Apple festival held at and by a farm. They are different in what theyoffer, andcommunity festivals tend to be less expensive so they are grouped separately.(of course not all states and areas have both.)Following thefestival listings are links to our easy to follow directions aboutmaking apple jam, freezing apples, apple pies andmuch more.
